How to Shine Like the Sun When You’re Feeling Depleted in Winter

There’s a particular kind of tiredness that can arrive in the middle of winter. It’s not always dramatic. Sometimes it’s just a quiet feeling of being flat, depleted and a little over everything. The days are colder, the light disappears earlier and somehow even the simplest things can feel like they take more effort.

And when you’re feeling like this, there can be a strange pressure to somehow pull yourself out of it. To be positive. To be productive. To exercise more, eat better, get organised, get motivated and generally become the person you think you should be. But sometimes you’re just tired.

Maybe shining like the sun doesn’t mean being bright and energetic all the time. Maybe it means finding small ways to bring a little warmth back into your day.

Open the curtains and let whatever sunlight there is into the room. Get outside for a walk, even if it’s only for ten minutes. Put the kettle on. Make something nourishing. Put music on while you potter around the house. Ring someone you actually enjoy talking to. Sit in the sun when it appears. Wear something that makes you feel good. Go to bed early without feeling guilty about it.

There is something comforting about remembering that the sun doesn't shine brightly every day either. There are clouds, rain, long stretches of darkness and seasons when the light feels far away. None of that means the sun has disappeared.

Maybe we can give ourselves the same permission.

You don’t have to be inspiring today. You don’t have to be full of energy. You don’t have to turn your life around before lunchtime. Sometimes the most loving thing you can do is recognise that you’re depleted and stop asking so much of yourself.

Let winter be a little slower.

Let yourself rest. Let yourself be warmed. Let other people bring some light to you instead of always feeling like you have to create it for everyone else.

And then, when your energy starts to return, you’ll have something left to give.

Because shining like the sun isn’t about being switched on all the time.

Sometimes it’s simply about remembering that the light is still there, even when you can’t feel it.
